At present install Hide Updates Tool from this link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/aid/307393...

Uninstall Upgrade Banana In Settings > Apps & Features.

Clear out any Upgrade folders in C: drive root.

Restart PC, turn back on Windows Update service, Immediately open up the Hibernate Updates tool to Search for Updates until it shows Version 1709 Feature Update, Hibernate the Update.

Now you can expect until you're ready to manually run the Upgrade by installing Media Creation Tool to Upgrade Now: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-u.s.a./windows-10/m...

At that place are other methods to turn off Automatic Updates here: https://www.askvg.com/fixing-windows-ten-automat...

Yous could even save a System Paradigm fill-in to exam the next Version Update, if necessary restore the image and hibernate it, too.

Some are reporting better operation past turning off Windows Updates via Metered Connection or Services.msc, then only installing Version Updates 2x yr via the more stable Media Creation Tool: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m.... Version updates have all previous Updates rollled in.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and allow usa know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it'south resolved.

Hi Greg,

I really appreciated your thoughtful and detailed answer regarding turning off Windows Update service.  It helped but unfortunately, did non solve the problem.  Several days later the service miraculously (or rather demonically) returned.  I thought that perhaps I didn't follow your instructions to the letter so I did information technology again, only to consequence with the aforementioned conclusion.  I even did it ii more than times every bit carefully equally I could just still the demon daemon persists.  I appreciate the consideration for a possible future update to Win1709 but the reality is that this Toshiba laptop is simply not compatible with 1709 (according to Toshiba) and so if my hereafter efforts to regain command of my laptop "eliminates" my ability to upgrade, then I am quite fine with that.  The only affair that could change that is if I could figure out what specifically is incompatible with 1709, and update that, whether information technology be hardware (video IC) or software (ie. video driver).  I've done both such replacements (and more) quite successfully.  Unfortunately, Toshiba isn't saying.  Needless to say, if y'all have whatsoever ideas how I could diagnose the incompatibility myself, I would certainly welcome that also.  In whatever issue, if y'all have any more suggestions for eliminating what effectively amounts to malware (on ver 1709 incompatible computers), I am all ears - as Ross Perot used to say.  Yes, I know, that actually dates me.  If not, please know, I do appreciate your existing support for it at least buys me a few days before I take to spend more fourth dimension halting (temporarily) the onslaught of an invading marauder in one case once again.  Information technology's hard for me to believe that MS did not adjust for incompatible computers.  A simple yet strategic registry entry would likely practise it.  Just, of course, I would need to know what and where to use information technology.  Surely, in that location must be tens of thousands people in the same predicament.

Well, that'southward enough pontificating.  Cheers again.
